When is your birthday?
July 21st
What got you interested in acting and singing?
I been singing since I was about 4, in church choirs, school, and started writing songs and singing them as a teenager. Garage bands in high school.
What was the first play/show you were in?
Seriously, "The Ballad of the SadCafe" at the college I ended up doing a theatre arts degree at, in Louisiana.
If you could play any part in any show who would
you play?
There are two in particular that I've already played once, but would love to work on them again: Hamlet at the Texas Shakespeare Festival and Taylor Collins.
Who, if any, are your inspirations?
Brave and talented people. There are so many who have their own flavor of courage and gift. But I'll be thinking of some specifics!
How does it feel to be performing on Broadway?
Thrilling! I'm always aware of really this extraordinary opportunity I'm in the middle of. In Bklyn, I would find myself on stage feeling such love for the others with me. Eden, Karen, Ramona. Of course we did the show together in Denver, and it was just that much deeper for me in NY. And I adore Cleavant. He and I became good friends.
Why Brooklyn? What made you decide that you wanted
to be in this show?
It was an emergency audition. Two days before they were going to Denver, they needed to find a Taylor Collins. Apparently
they'd seen everyone they could. I think the casting director hadn't thought I was right for it, so I was never called in earlier. But out
of the blue he called me to come in first thing in the morning, April 10th, two years ago. I got the scenes and songs
on the doorstep the night before, stayed up all night at
a friend's apt and learned everything. Then I went in (looking
pretty bad, probably homeless!) and did my stuff. They hired me then, I jumped into rehearsals for two days, then flew to Denver. It was
a whirlwind! No extra time at all to get comfortable, just
took a big leap and started working it with the others.
What role has been your favorite to play?
Hamlet and Taylor Collins.
What did you sing for your auditions?
Before I sang Sometimes which I had learned the night before, I sang "Some Kinda Wonderful" by Grand Funk.
What is the most embarassing thing that happened
to you on stage?
In Bklyn, in Denver...Singing "The Truth", I completely went blank and started singing I'm not sure what. I just kept my mouth moving with the same three words until it came back. They still tease me about that.
Are you planning to go on tour with Brooklyn?
Not sure. They haven't officially asked me. I guess anything's possible, though.
What was going through your head during the final
show?
Well, I was trying to keep it on the show. But of course I couldn't
help thinking that it was the last time, after a very long
journey, and how moved I was to be sharing that evening
with everyone. Of course, it was an extraordinary night,
and that particular audience showed such love and appreciation.
We were all very moved.
What has been the saddest moment of your career?
What has been the happiest?
Gosh, it's such a ride all the way. During "The Who's Tommy"
my mother and little brother were very ill and passed away
shortly after we closed. To balance that out, though, my
daughter Lucy Rose was born during Tommy. That was a truly
wonderful time. I remember my dear friend, Cheryl Freeman who played the Acid Queen, would hold her while I was on stage.
